Clinical Training Manual on CBT for Insomnia
- Psychologists and Clinicians
The field of sleep medicine is rapidly expanding with
more than 2000 sleep clinics now in existence in the United States.
Insomnia is the most prevalent sleep disorder, affecting 15-33% of the
population with even higher prevalence rates in the elderly and clinical
populations. Although cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is now considered
the first-line treatment for chronic insomnia due to its superior long-term
efficacy, lack of side effects, and patient preference, there is a dire
shortage of clinicians and sleep clinics with expertise in CBT for insomnia
due to a scarcity of training opportunities in this area. As a result,
the vast majority of chronic insomnia patients is not being treated;
or, is increasingly being treated with sleep medications that often
are not evidence-based.
The Clinical Training Manual on CBT for Insomnia enables
clinicians to develop competence in establishing a five-session CBT
program for insomnia using an empirically and clinically validated CBT
protocol. The Clinical Training Manual on CBT for Insomnia
is based on almost two decades of clinical practice and research at
Harvard Medical School and the University of Massachusetts Memorial
Medical Center by Gregg D. Jacobs, Ph.D., involving over 10,000 insomnia
patients. The Clinical Training Manual on CBT for Insomnia
is also based on extensive empirical research on CBT for insomnia, including
a landmark federally-funded study conducted at Harvard Medical School
by Gregg D. Jacobs, Ph.D. and colleagues that demonstrated that the
same CBT protocol described in the Clinical Training Manual
on CBT for Insomnia was more effective than Ambien ((Jacobs,
GD, et al. Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Pharmacotherapy for Insomnia:
a Randomized Controlled Trial and Direct Comparison. Archives of Internal
Medicine, 2004, 164: 1888-96)
The Clinical Training Manual on CBT for Insomnia is
