Online CBT-I Improves Sleep and Reduces Anxiety and Depression.

A recent randomized controlled trial investigated the effectiveness of online CBT-I in a sample of 290 participants with chronic insomnia who were randomized to CBT-I or a control condition. Online questionnaires were completed before randomization and 3 and 6 months after treatment. After 3 months, the intervention group showed lower insomnia, depression, and anxiety symptoms, as well as improved overall functioning compared with the control group. These effects were stable after 6 months. The results indicate that, in addition to a therapeutic effect on insomnia, online CBT-I may prevent the onset of other psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety.
