EEG Wearables for Sleep
As reviewed recently in the New York Times (https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/brain-wave-tracking-sleep-wearables/?searchResultPosition=1), the Oura Ring, Whoop, and other wearables such as watches and Fitbits only estimate sleep based on different physiological characteristics such as blood oxygen or movement such as tossing and turning, and there is little evidence they improve sleep. Newer EEG headband and earbud wearables can now track brain waves, which are the gold standard for tracking sleep stages. Although these EEG devices may be more accurate, they are pricey, uncomfortable to wear all night, and have frequent connection problems. Like other wearables, there are no data suggesting EEG wearables improve sleep. In fact, many users find that some wearables make sleep worse due to discomfort. Other users obsess over what the device says rather than what their body says, which can exacerbate anxiety about sleep or insomnia. For these reasons, CBT-I uses a sleep diary instead of wearables to track perception of sleep.
