Internet-Based CBT-I is Effective in National Routine Care

Internet-delivered CBT-I has been shown to be efficacious for insomnia in numerous research studies. However, few studies have reported its efficacy in routine medical care. A new study examined the effectiveness of internet CBT-I, supported by therapists, in nationwide routine care in Finland. Almost 2500 physician-referred patients were referred to therapist-supported internet CBT-I. Treatment was free of charge for patients. 75% of patients completed the treatment. Over 90% of the completers reported improved sleep, and one-third achieved complete remission of insomnia. The magnitude of improvement was comparable to prior randomized controlled trials. These findings suggest that therapist-supported internet CBT-I is effective for insomnia in a national routine care setting.
